Shenkar Conference 2014

Department of Cultural Studies

Visual Culture: Between Resistance and Obedience

The conference aims to explore “obedience” and “resistance” as key concepts in the study of visual culture from a variety of perspectives—national, political, ethnic, class, and gender. This interdisciplinary conference asks what roles obedience and resistance might play in the production and dissemination of a visual image? Does the image obey or resist the visual order? How can a focus on these dichotomous concepts contribute to our understanding of the distinction between reality and its representations?
