Description
Recent debates in metaphysics have concerned notions such as grounding, essence and structure. These notions appear to be hyperintensional, in that they make distinctions finer than those captured by standard possible worlds semantics.
This workshop aims to bring together philosophers working at the intersection of hyperintensional semantics, metaphysics and meta-metaphysics. We welcome submissions that explore the implications of hyperintensionality for metaphysical theorizing and critically examine the metaphysical underpinnings of hyperintensional distinctions.
Topics may include (but are not limited to):
-
Are hyperintensional distinctions worldly or representational?
-
The metaphysical status of grounding and fundamentality. Are grounding-facts fundamental, grounded or neither?
-
The fine-grainedness of facts, properties and propositions.
-
Which kind of semantics most accurately tracks subject-matter in metaphysical explanation – topics, structured propositions, or truthmakers?
-
The relationship between hyperintensional metaphysics and an abundant ontology.
-
The role of hyperintensionality for elucidating meta-metaphysical debates about realism and deflationism.
