Details

The workshop will focus on the notion of epistêmê and related notions in authors from Plato to later Greek and Roman antiquity. We are particularly interested in conceptual issues; fully aware that metaphysical disagreements may give rise to epistemological differences between philosophers, we would like to focus in particular on the following questions:  How did these philosophers conceptualize epistêmê and/or similar, lesser epistemic states? How did they distinguish epistêmê from other epistemic states, in particular, from technê? How did they conceive of the relationship between the cognitive content of the epistemic states and the abilities involved (e.g., the abilities to prove, to argue about, to defend judgements, to produce or even to recognize)? What value in particular did they attribute to epistêmê over other epistemic achievements?
