Richard Swinburne’s substance dualism is an anomaly in the field of the philosophy of mind. In addition to a commitment to some or other form of naturalism, materialism in various forms has been the ascendant position in the philosophy of mind in recent decades, and materialism dismisses substance dualism. Swinburne is aware of his marginal situation but argues that substance dualism is a position compatible with the current scientific world view, which is often taken to motivate naturalism. This paper canvases and evaluates his arguments for substance dualism.
