"Mind and Nature" University of Ottawa Graduate Student Conference

The relation between mind and nature is one of the oldest questions in philosophy. Already in Plato’s Phaedo, we find Socrates praising Anaxagoras for having introduced nous (mind) into the explanation of nature, but criticizing him for not having made sufficient use of this principle. Turning to the modern day, we see a wide variety of questions surrounding this relation: Is a naturalistic account of mind possible? Would such an account threaten our conceptions of subjectivity and agency? Can the structure of nature be explained by the cognitive structures of the mind, or vice versa?

The University of Ottawa Graduate Philosophy Students’ Association (GPSA) is hosting the 12th annual De Philosophia Graduate Student Conference on "Mind and Nature" 8-10 April 2016. The conference will be bilingual and will feature a keynote presentation by Sean McGrath (Memorial University Newfoundland).

La relation entre l’esprit et la nature est l’une des premières questions de l’histoire de la philosophie. Déjà dans le Phédon de Platon, Socrate fait l’éloge d’Anaxagore pour avoir introduit le noûs (esprit) comme principe de l’explication de la nature, mais lui reproche en même temps de ne pas en avoir fait assez usage. À partir de l’époque moderne, de nombreuses questions quant à cette relation émergent : Une théorie naturaliste de l’esprit est-elle possible? Une telle théorie présenterait-elle un danger pour nos conceptions de la subjectivité et de l’agentivité (agency)? La structure de la nature peut-elle être expliquée au moyen des structures cognitives de l’esprit, ou inversement?

    L’Association des étudiants diplômé(e)s en philosophie (AÉDP) de l’Université d’Ottawa organisent le 12ième colloque annuel De Philosophia sur "L'esprit et la nature" qui aura lieu le 8 au 10 avril 2016. Le colloque sera bilingue et inclura une présentation d'ouverture par Sean McGrath (Memorial University Newfoundland).
