CFP: Sharing Practice

This conference aims to bring together academics from the creative arts concerned with the relationship between Practice as Research (PAR) and practice research led teaching.

Practice research in the creative arts encompasses a diverse range of approaches, methods and performance outputs. How can we share these varied practices in supervising and teaching within higher education?

Playing on the double meaning of ‘practice’ – in PAR and when sharing ‘best practice’ – this event offers the opportunity to reflect on the development of pedagogical principles and what teaching innovation can mean within practice research.

The event covers three central themes:

a. Practice research fed postgraduate teaching

• how do we teach Master’s students practice in the arts?
• what challenges are faced for practice led postgraduate courses?

b. Supervising practice PhDs (and UG/PG major projects)

• what considerations must be acknowledged in supervising practice research?
• what forms of output and dissemination are possible in practice PHDs?
• how should practice PHDs be assessed and disseminated?
• how do we process applications and interviews for practice PHDs?

c. Practice teaching innovation  in undergraduate teach

• how might we implement innovation in teaching practice?
• how might we assess practice learning?
• what support is required for practice teaching?
• how can practice be a contribution to knowledge?
• how does performance present ideas and learning which can be used as assessment, including synoptic assessment?

We invite 500-word proposals for 20 minute papers, workshops and lecture-recitals in relation to the above conference themes. All fields (film-making, music, dance, drama and performance, fine art, creative writing. media art) welcome.

The conference organizers welcome proposals for varying modes of presentation and/or dissemination of research including lecture recital, practical demonstration, workshop, papers, panels, dialogues and participatory forms.
