Individual Concepts: a special issue of Topoi
Guest edited by Tadeusz Ciecierski (Institute of Philosophy, University of Warsaw) and Paweł Grabarczyk (Institute of Philosophy, University of Łódź)
In Meaning and Necessity Rudolf Carnap coined the term “individual concept” in order to refer to intensions of singular terms: individual descriptions and individual constants. Since then the proliferation of investigations devoted to singular reference resulted in, among other things, the new theory of reference, re-introduction of Russellian propositions into semantic theories, the birth of various sophisticated versions of descriptivism and the specification of the class of indexical (de se, de hic, de nunc) thoughts. Some of such developments indicated that Carnap's idea was capacious enough to fit the future philosophical debates, others (e.g. the idea of direct reference) opposed the very applicability of the notion of individual concepts in semantics, yet others suggested the possibility of replacing the abstract notion of individualconcept with that of singular mental representation. Papers are invited that address not only various aspects of such developments, but also general questions regarding the unity of mental and linguistic content and the applicability of semantic concepts outside the field of semantics (e.g. in the theory of mental content) as well the issue of the relation between fictional, empty and singular representations.
