DIVINE AND HUMAN ACTION: AGENCY AND ACTION IN PHILOSOPHY AND THEOLOGY

MARCH 30-31, 2012

Keynote Speaker: William Abraham (Southern Methodist University)

The Philosophy Department at HBU invites papers addressing the topics of agency and action in philosophy and theology.  We welcome papers on divine agency, miracles, foreknowledge, free will, agent causation, election, and fatalism.  In addition, we will happily consider papers on any philosophical topic.  The Philosophy Department at HBU encourages papers from both analytic and continental traditions.

To submit a paper, please send an abstract of around 300 words to Dr. Jeff Green at [email protected].  Abstracts should be in an electronic format and prepared for blind review.  Participants will have 30 minutes to present their papers.

The deadline for submission is January 31, with notification of acceptance by February 14.

In an effort to support excellence in undergraduate philosophy education, some sessions have been reserved for undergraduate paper submissions.  Undergraduate students are encouraged to apply by sending a completed paper by January 31 to [email protected].  We are happy to announce that a stipend of $250 will be available for the best undergraduate paper submitted.  Please indicate in your submission that you would like to be considered for this award.  HBU students are not eligible for this award.

William J. Abraham, Albert Cook Outler Professor of Wesley Studies at SMU, will be the keynote speaker.  His first address, titled “Divine and Human Action in Conversion,” will be on Friday, March 30 at 7:00 pm.  The second, titled “God as Agent,” will be on Saturday, March 31 at 11:30 am.  Both talks will be in Belin Chapel on the campus of Houston Baptist University.
