Call for Papers: Synthese Special Issue "True Enough? Themes from Elgin"

Guest Editors: Federica Isabella Malfatti (University of Innsbruck), Christoph Jäger (University of Innsbruck)

Special Issue Description: The special issue discusses the philosophy of Catherine Z. Elgin. We call contributors' attention especially to Elgin's new book, True Enough, but will also welcome contributions on other aspects of her work. Topics may include: the nature and conditions of understanding, especially the relation between understanding and knowledge, understanding and explanation, or understanding and exemplification; holism in epistemology and the philosophy of science; the notion of representation in the arts and in the sciences; models, idealizations, and factivity; coherence and epistemic justification; and much more. We welcome submissions of individual papers critically discussing Elgin's work and/or exploring new ideas based on or connected to it. The special issue will also feature an article in which Elgin responds to the accepted papers.

Topics may include:

- From knowledge to understanding?

- The nature and conditions of understanding

- Exemplification

- Holism in epistemology and the philosophy of science

- Coherence and epistemic justification

- (Scientific) representation

- The epistemic role of idealizations, models, thought experiments 

Submissions:

We invite original contributions that have not been submitted elsewhere. It is recommended that submissions not exceed 10.000 words. Please include a separate title page containing the contact details of the author(s), an abstract (150-250 words) and a list of 4-6 keywords. All papers will be subject to double-blind peer-review. Manuscripts should be submitted online through Editorial Manager: http://www.editorialmanager.com/synt.
