The Social Institution of Norms: a workshop with Robert Brandom

8-10 April 2019, University of Vienna

Robert Brandom has championed the idea that genuine norms are profoundly social: not only do they govern and guide our discursive practices, they are also instituted by way of the recognitive attitudes people take up towards one another. On the occasion of Brandom's 2019 Brentano lectures (8-10 April, University of Vienna), we are hosting a workshop on the social dimensions of discursive norms. Particular foci include (but are not limited to):

- reciprocal recognition, deontic score-keeping and normativity;

- social approaches to intentionality;

- the relations between 'I-thou' and 'I-we' forms of sociality;

- historicism and intersubjectivity.

Confirmed invited speakers:

- Robert Brandom (Pittsburgh)

- Rebecca Kukla (Georgetown)

- Jaroslav Peregrin (Prague)

- Anandi Hattiangadi (Stockholm)

- Jeremy Wanderer (UMB)

We welcome submissions of long abstracts on any of the themes listed above. Abstracts should be between 700 and 1200 words and prepared for blind review. Please send your abstract by email to Michaela Bartsch: [email protected] [email protected]>
