ABSTRACT: Reflection on the role of emotion in action sheds considerable light on the fundamental problem of distinguishing between actions and happenings. After surveying and offering my own assessment of the recent literature on emotional action, I put forward my claim that there are at least three different notions of action and that emotional action provides us with examples of each of these three senses. I also suggest a characterization of each of these senses and argue that much of what seems puzzling about emotional action becomes intelligible when making this threefold distinction.
