Details

Surprise is a subject of research in diverse fields: psychology, cognitive science, English literature, information theory, economics and philosophy. However, thus far, knowledge accumulated within one discipline has rarely traveled across disciplines. Our interdisciplinary workshop on surprise aims to bring together researchers from the different disciplines to share with each other valuable insights about surprise and create a new interdisciplinary conversation.

Alongside a number of invited speakers, we invite researchers from any field, whose work sheds light on surprise, to submit abstracts by December 1, 2019 to [email protected] .

Abstracts should be between 700-1000 words and appropriate for a 45-minute presentation. The work presented need not be new and unpublished. Rather, consider what part of your research could be most useful to people working in other disciplines.

Please prepare your abstract for anonymous review and include the following in a separate document: abstract title, author’s name, institutional affiliation, and email address. In the subject line of the email, please write: “surprise workshop submission.”

We especially encourage submissions from women and members of other under-represented groups.

Participants’ travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the conference organizers.

Questions can be sent to: [email protected] or [email protected]
