Please join us as the department of philosophy at Western University hosts a Philosophical Briefing with Michael Anderson. The Philosophical Briefing is an informal event with our own faculty members briefly discussing a topic related to their research and then engaging with the audience on that topic.

1:30 - 2:30 pm

Recently I've been trying to formalize the notion of a constraint, and understand how constraints play a role in scientific explanations. This effort has two motivations: a narrow one, to develop an alternative to mechanistic explanation in neuroscience, in light of the fact that not all neural systems seem equally amenable to mechanistic explanation. And a broad one, to explore the possibility of offering multi-level explanations in a consistent "style", whether what is being explained is brain activity, individual behavior, or social phenomena.
