It is uncontroversial that we trust the testimony of scientific experts to improve our knowledge. But why is it epistemically justified to trust someone’s word? How exactly should this kind of trust be defined? When is it rational to trust or distrust scientific testimony? This colloquium seeks to explore these questions with regard to public debates, in which non-expert audiences increasingly tend to be both, overly trusting as well as overly doubtful about scientific claims.
