Title: Kant and the Return of Israel: The Curious Case of Morris Cangallerie

Abstract:

A peculiar footnote in the handwritten manuscript on which Kant's Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View is based refers to one 'Morris Cangallerie.' An enigmatic figure to be sure, 'Cangallerie' is mentioned nowhere else in Kant's corpus and his name is in any case omitted from the version of the text published in 1798. In this presentation, I make a case for the (likely) identity of 'Cangallerie', consider why Kant might have seen fit to include him in the footnote in the handwritten text in the first place, and then speculate as to the (broadly) philosophical considerations that might have led Kant to think better about mentioning him in the published version.
