Dominic McIver Lopes is Distinguished University Scholar and Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia. He works mainly in aesthetics and is a member of the UBC aesthetics group. His research focusses on pictorial representation and perception; the aesthetic and epistemic value of pictures, including scientific images; theories of art and its value; the ontology of art; and computer art and new art forms. He is the author of several books: A Philosophy of Computer Art (2009), Sight and Sensibility: Evaluating Pictures (2005), Understanding Pictures (1996), as well as of a number of articles in prestigious journals. Lopes is President of the American Society for Aesthetics (2013-15). He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the British Society of Aesthetics, Secretary-Treasurer of the American Philosophical Association Pacific Division, a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, and co-editor (with Berys Gaut) of Wiley-Blackwell’s New Directions in Aesthetics book series.
Jesse Prinz is a Distinguished Professor of philosophy and director of the Committee for Interdisciplinary Science Studies at the City University of New York, Graduate Center. Prinz works primarily in the philosophy of psychology and has authored several books, among others
Furnishing the Mind: Concepts and Their Perceptual Basis (2002), Gut Reactions: A Perceptual Theory of Emotion (2004), The Emotional Construction of Morals (2007), Beyond Human Nature (2012), and over 100 articles, addressing such topics as emotion, moral psychology, aesthetics and consciousness. Much of his work in these areas has been a defense of empiricism against psychological nativism, and he situates his work as in the naturalistic tradition. Prinz is also an advocate of experimental philosophy. He is currently working on a book entitled Works of Wonder: The Psychology and Ontology of Art (OUP, forthcoming).
