Title of Prof. Nidesh Lawtoo’s Lecture: The Performativity of Homo Mimeticus: Beyond Nature and Culture

In this talk Nidesh Lawtoo offers an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of mimetic studies tied to his ERC project Homo Mimeticus. Contrary to dominant definitions of mimesis restricted to a realistic representation of nature, Lawtoo argues that the all too human ability to imitate was central to the birth of philosophy,  goes beyond nature and culture, and anticipates contemporary concerns with plasticity and performativity. Critical engagements from Plato to Nietzsche, Malabou to Butler will help foreground the performativity of homo mimeticus.
